4 Fun Facts about Hobbits

4 Fun Facts about Hobbits

2 minute read

It’s Hobbit Day at the Wyvern’s Hoard and all around the world! How about some fun facts about hobbits and the Lord of the Rings over a second breakfast to celebrate?

Hobbits eat six meals a day.

Breakfast, second breakfast, and elevenses in the morning (which is a real thing across Europe and some South American countries, mainly consisting of light snacks and refreshments). Then luncheon and afternoon tea from 1-4 PM, and then of course a filling dinner at the end of a long, hard day of feasting and merrymaking!

Hobbits don’t actually have big feet!

Thanks to the illustrations of the Brothers Hildebrandt and Peter Jackson’s interpretation, we now think of hobbits as having large feet! But Tolkien never said hobbits necessarily have large feet (although their feet are always hairy). Tolkien wrote that large feet are a particular trait of the Proudfoot clan, who were relatives of the Baggins by marriage.

There was more than one type of hobbit

In fact, there were 3 types of “pre”-hobbits, ancestors of the hobbits we now know. They’re the Harfoots, the Stoors, and the Fallohides. The Harfoots lived in holes and were largely farmers, like the “present day” hobbits of the story. The Stoors lived close to water. The Fallohides were forest-dwellers and were the most adventurous of them all.

Gollum was a Stoor.

Gollum, formerly known as Smeagol, was a river-dweller who had been transformed and distorted by the One Ring. The Stoors lived in the Vales of Anduin like all the other hobbits, in the Gladden Fields, where they spent their time fishing, swimming, and sailing boats.

How many of these facts did you already know? Which fact is your favorite? We’d love to know!

In the meantime, show some Middle Earth pride with these Lord of the Rings-inspired products.
