1. ‘Alpha’ wolves are just parents
Because of certain stories, the image of the dominant breeding pair leading the pack is incorrect. Wolf packs are primarily the pair’s children, so their dominance isn’t actually gained by fighting.
2. They’re skilled communicators
They howl at night, but not at the moon. These howls can convey messages up to 10 miles away! It can help them assemble their pack, find missing members, defend territory and more.
3. Wolves help regulate their ecosystems
As much as you might not like seeing herbivores die, apex predators play a key role. Yellowstone National Park is a prime example. When the wolves disappeared, elks flourished unsustainably and caused the entire forest to tip out of balance.
4. Wolves mate for life
This one is true! For better or for worse, once a wolf chooses its mate, they tend to stay together until the end. However, only the alpha pair tends to breed.
5. 'Wolfing it down’ isn’t just a saying
Did you know that wolves can eat up to 9kgs in one sitting?! If you or I did this it would be quite unhealthy, but since they never know when their next meal will be, they gorge themselves when they can.
