December 31st is Voldemort’s Birthday! Yes, he’s bad and power-hungry, but he’s also one of the most compelling villains in YA because of his mystique and general… scary-ness.
To celebrate his birthday (it’s today! Happy birthday, Voldy!) we’ve collected a handful of fun facts about He-Who-Must-Be-Named.

It’s Voldemooor not VoldemorT
Yep. Turns out the ‘t’ in Voldemort is supposed to be silent. Although no one seems to pronounce it that way in any of the movies or the audiobooks, JK Rowling confirmed that the name is supposed to be pronounced Voldemor, which in French means “flight of death.”
Voldemort was born incapable of love
Voldemort’s mother, Merope Gaunt, slipped Riddle Sr. a love potion and conceived Voldemort under its effects. This made Voldemort born incapable of feeling love, having never been the product of it. He might’ve had a chance to be good, but Riddle Sr. left as soon as the effects of the love potion wore off, and Merope died, leaving Voldemort an orphan. 🙁
He made his first horcrux at 16
Talk about overachieving! Creating a horcrux is a complicated process that involves severing a part of your soul and putting it into an object. That he was able to achieve this at the tender age of sixteen is a testament to his power and cunning.
His family kept it in the… well, family
Voldemort’s family had a history of marrying their cousins to try and preserve the purity of their blood. The Gaunt family were obsessed with keeping their heritage pure and undistilled, an obsession Voldemort would inherit. Family reunions must’ve been awkward.
Voldy’s first job was at Borgin & Burkes
Because Voldemort was so obsessed with magic and wizard history, it’s no surprise that his first job was at the super shady Borgin and Burkes. As a shop boy, no less. Burke himself took advantage of Merope and bought Salazar Slytherin’s locket for a paltry sum, and Voldemort later took revenge by murdering the owner and retrieving his family heirloom.
