All sorts of creatures run amok at the Hoard! Behold our bestiary of delightful and monstrous mythical creatures from all over the world. Here are our top favorites!

The Fylgja

In Norse mythology, the fylgja is said to be a kind of guardian spirit, usually in the form of an animal, fairy, or sometimes human form. It accompanies a person in connection to their fate and fortune, akin to a totem animal, and can most often be seen in dreams.

The Kitsune

According to Japanese folklore, all kitsune (foxes) can shapeshift and possess magical abilities that get stronger as they grow older. When they turn 100, they are said to grow extra tails, as many as nine, and many people make offerings to them as deities of a kind.

Huginn and Munin

“Memory” and “Mind” are Odin’s ravens who fly all over the world and bring information back to him. He sends them out in the morning to fly around the world and they return to him by breakfast, to whisper in his ears. This is why Odin is called the ‘raven-god.’

The Phoenix

Phoenixes show up in mythologies all over the world, including Ancient Egyptian and Chinese myths. They’re said to be symbols of immortality, fortune, renewal, the afterlife, and the sun. They also have a longstanding relationship with royalty, and was a symbol associated with the Chinese empress.

The Kraken

This legendary sea monster was first described in 1753 and has been the subject of sailors’ superstitions ever since. Said to be an octopus or a squid of tremendous size, the Kraken has been portrayed in several films, most famously in the Clash of the Titans where the sentence “Release the Kraken!” originates from.
