It’s Katniss Everdeen’s birthday! Happy birthday, Mockingjay!
If you’ve never read the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins and have only seen the movies, you might have missed a few key things about Katniss’s character.
So today, to celebrate this strong, kick-butt protagonist, we’re sharing 5 facts you might not have known about the Mockingjay herself.
Katniss was supposed to have dark hair and be olive-skinned.
When Jennifer Lawrence was first chosen to play Katniss in "The Hunger Games" movie, some fans were hesitant. In the books, Katniss was described as having an olive skin tone and dark hair, and she was very thin yet muscular. Jennifer Lawrence didn't exactly match that description. However, her performance in the movie was so impressive that many fans ended up changing their minds and forgetting about their initial concerns.
District 11 sent Katniss bread.
In the Hunger Games, it's not common for tributes from different districts to exchange packages. However, when Katniss received bread from District 11, the home district of Rue, it was a significant moment. This act of kindness demonstrated how much they appreciated Katniss and her efforts to protect Rue. It also symbolized the beginning of a bond between the less privileged districts. Notably, District 11 was extremely impoverished, making it even more impressive that they were able to gather resources to help Katniss.
Katniss saw a lot of her sister in Rue and Peeta.
Katniss viewed Rue as a sort of substitute for her own sister, Primrose. They were both similar in age, build, and had little chance of survival. Originally, Primrose was supposed to be the tribute, so when Katniss met Rue, she couldn't help but see her own sister in her and felt a strong urge to protect her. On top of that, Peeta caught her eye because he was kind-hearted, just like Primrose. Eventually, Katniss realized that she cared more for Peeta than her longtime friend and sweetheart, Gale, all thanks to his selflessness and willingness to help others.
Katniss used her hunting skills to feed her family.
After her father passed away, Katniss took on the responsibility of providing for her family. To make ends meet, she learned how to hunt and gather food, skills that would eventually help her survive in the Hunger Games.
Unlike the Career tributes who trained for the games, Katniss learned her skills out of necessity. For her, survival was the name of the game.
Katniss stopped singing after her father’s death.
Katniss had a beautiful singing voice, which she inherited from her father with whom she was close. However, after he passed away, she stopped singing completely, and for several years, she didn't sing at all.
When she eventually sang to Rue in the Hunger Games, it was a significant moment that demonstrated how deeply Rue's death had impacted her. Although the movie adaptation portrayed Katniss singing, it didn't offer as much insight into the backstory behind her reluctance to sing.
