The origins of the word “geek” are… kind of gross?
“Geek” used to mean a circus performer who usually bit off the head of a live chicken or a snake. (Ew.) The word later evolved to mean an “eccentric” or someone who was on the outskirts of society. But these days us geeks have reclaimed the name! We don’t bite heads off of things these days, though. Most of us, anyway.
Geeks VS Nerds: the data tells all.
Slackpropagation published an article with full on data to show the differences between geeks and nerds. There are some similarties. Slackpropogation says, “Both are dedicated to their subjects, and sometimes socially awkward. The distinction is that geeks are fans of their subjects, and nerds are practitioners of them.” Check out their article here!
The geekiest state in the United States is… UTAH?!
According to Estately, the geekiest state in America is Utah. To determine this, they looked at Facebook data to figure out what percentage of users from each state listed their interests as total geek stuff like D&D, Star Wars, Star Trek—you get the picture. Utaha took the top spot, with Washington D.C. coming in as the least geeky state.
There’s no world record for the biggest LARP game. Yet!
As of writing, there’s no entry in the Guinness World Records for “Most participants in a live-action role-playing (LARP) game” yet. But with bigger and bigger events happening every year, we’re sure we’ll see some records being set soon. We might even see you there. Excelsior!
