January 6 is Sherlock Holmes’ Birthday!
And how do we celebrate this super sleuth’s cake day?
Elementary, my dear reader. We’re going to sniff out 5 fun facts about Sherlock Holmes, our favorite detective.
He never technically said “Elementary, my dear Watson”
At least not in the movies. He said “elementary” and “my dear Watson” at different times, but people started putting the two phrases together. The first time the full phrase was written down was in a P.G. Wodehouse novel called Psmith, Journalist.
In a parallel universe, his name is Sherrinford
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was going to call his famous character Sherrinford, but decided to name him after a famous cricketer instead, the author being a huge fan of cricket. Thank goodness for that! Sherrinford doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.
Sherlock never wore a deerstalker
At least, not much. Illustrator Sidney Paget drew Sherlock Holmes as wearing the iconic hat to investigate mysteries in rural areas, although these days most people think of Sherlock Holmes as wearing that hat to investigate all the time.
The first Sherlock novel was a flop
A Study in Scarlet was rejected by a lot of publishers before it was finally published in 1887, in Beeton’s Christmas Annual, a British paperback magazine. Although now a classic, at the time the novel did not sell well at all, and sank into obscurity.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did a lot of other cool stuff
He was of course a knight; he invented the word “grimpen”; he wrote a lot of historical novels; and his sci-fi novel The Lost World would later go on to inspire Jurassic Park. He was our kind of dude!
