On this day in the year 2931 of the Third Age, a great king was born. That king was Aragorn, a Ranger of the North, heir of King Isildur. Today we honor and celebrate the King of Gondor with five fun facts about him and the Lord of the Rings universe. Join us!
1. Aragorn has many names
While he was raised in Rivendell, Aragorn went by the name Estel to protect his identity as the heir of Isildur. As a Ranger of the North he was introduced by the name Strider. And when he finally was crowned King of Gondor and Arnor, he was given the name King Elessar (or King Elessar Telcontar) by Galadriel.
2. Aragorn was a Dúnedain
The Dúnedain were a special race of men descended from the Men of Númenor. The Dúnedain weren’t ordinary humans; they lived longer and had great power and wisdom. They were also pale-skinned, tall, with dark hair and grey eyes. Sounds a lot like our boy Aragorn!
3. Aragorn was their 16th Chieftain
He wasn’t just a regular ol’ Dúnedain, no. He was their chieftain, a title passed down to the heirs of Isildur. The title was created by the Witch-king of Angmar following the destruction of Arthedain, and was later succeeded by Aranarth, Arahael, and so on, until we came to the 16th chieftain, which is of course Aragorn.
4. He bore the Scepter of Annúminas
This was presented to him by Elrond, after Aragorn took the throne. The scepter has a rich history; it’s the oldest artifact of Man in Middle-Earth, brought to Earth by Elendil. It’s uncertain whether the scepter has any magical powers, though it is a potent symbol of royalty.
5. Aragorn hunted Gollum.
In the Lord of the Rings novels (and in a 2009 fan film called The Hunt for Gollum), Gandalf the Grey tasks Aragorn with finding Gollum and retrieving the One Ring. Aragorn hunted the pitiful creature through Rhovanion and eventually captured him in the Dead Marshes. Gollum was brought to Mirkwood, but escaped with the help of the forces of Sauron.
