It’s our favorite potions master’s birthday today! To celebrate and honor ol’ Severus, we’ve prepared five fun facts we bet you didn’t know about him.
Starting with…
1. He could fly without using a broomstick
Aside from Voldemort, the only person who mastered flight without the assistance of brooms is the Half-Blood Prince himself. Both of them could surround themselves with a smoky black mist that lifted them up in the air, allowing them to fly while casting other curses and spells.
2. ‘Snape’ is a small village in England
Specifically it’s a small village in Suffolk Country, just east of Cambridge and north of London. The word snape is also an alternate spelling of sneap, which means “to rebuke” or “snub.”
3. Rita Skeeter wrote a book about him
It’s no secret that Rita Skeeter liked to sensationalize the lives of famous witches and wizards. She wrote several scandalous books, like The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore, and Armando Dippet: Master or Moron? She also wrote a particularly unpleasant book about Severus called Snape: Scoundrel or Saint? #JusticeForSnape
4. Snape was the only Death Eater with a Patronus
Because Dementors and other meanies were aligned with Lord Voldy, they rarely had a need to conjure a Patronus—a charm that was made of light and love, the antithesis of all that the Death Eaters stood for. But since Snape’s capacity for love was more potent than his dark side, he was able to conjure a Patronus: a doe, just like Lily’s. 😭
5. At 38, he was the youngest Headmaster of Hogwarts
Snape was kind of an overachiever! At 21, he took the position of Potions Master and Head of Slytherin after Horace Slughorn retired. And while most of the previous Headmasters were well past 60 when they took the position, Snape was only the tender age of 38. Of course, he didn’t last long in the position, because… well… you know… 💀 #RIPHeadmasterSnape
