How do you celebrate Mad Hatter Day? Throw an Unbirthday tea party, dress up with your friends, and indulge in some Alice in Wonderland-themed chaos! And if that all sounds like too much work, celebrate with the Hoard by adding some Mad Hatter trivia to your hat.
In no particular order, 4 little-known facts about the Mad Hatter:
The phrase “mad as a hatter” originated in the
19th century.
Long before Lewis Caroll wrote about the Mad Hatter, people had been using the term to describe an eccentric person. This phrase originates from when mercury was used to manufacture felt hats, and the hatters who visited these factories often developed mercury poisoning, the symptoms of which included slurred speech, memory loss, and tremors.
Lewis Caroll never called his character “The Mad Hatter.”
It seems this nickname was given to the character by readers. In both Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, the character is only ever referred to as “The Hatter” or “Hatta.”
Caroll probably knew a lot of hatters.
Lewis Caroll grew up in Stockport in Greater Manchester, England, where millinery was the main trade.
The Mad Hatter might have been inspired by a real man.
Many theorize that illustrations of the Mad Hatter were based on an eccentric British furniture dealer, Theophilus Carter, who had the habit of standing outside of his shop wearing a top hat on his head. Carter supposedly invented the Alarm Clock Bed, exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851, which woke the sleeper up by tipping them into a tub of cold water.
