Norse Mythology
In Norse Mythology, eclipses were said to be the doing of two wolves, Skoll and Hati (literally: One Who Mocks and One Who Hates), sons of Fenrir. It was said that Skoll and Hati pursued the Aesir, Sol and Mani (literally: Sun and Moon). Whenever an eclipse occurred, it was believed that Sol or Mani had been overtaken by Skoll and Hati. In an effort to scare away the wolves, the people below would hoot and holler, to free the sun or moon from the wolves’ clutches. The story goes: if Skoll and Hati were ever able to successfully eat the moon and sun, it would usher in Ragnarok, the End of Days.

Among the Yolngu of Arnhem Land, an eclipse is said to be what happens when the moon (a man) and the sun (a woman) embrace. The Wirangu also believe this to be true, although they say that the eclipse is caused by a spirit called Waddi who covers the earth’s eyes for the sun and the moon’s privacy.
