Our Favorite Ancient Egyptian Deities

Our Favorite Ancient Egyptian Deities

3 minute read

The ancient stories are full of magic and wonder. We love all of the old myths and legends, but some of our favorites are from the Ancient Egyptians. Stories of immortality, fate, and powerful deities waiting just beyond the veil.

What’s not to love?

Here are our top three favorite deities from Ancient Egypt.

Horus

This falcon-headed god symbolizes light and royalty. When Horus was an infant, his uncle Set—god of war and chaos—killed his father, Osiris. Horus’ mother, Isis, hid Horus in the marshland of the Nile, where he learned magicks from his mother—goddess of motherhood, magick, death, healing, and rebirth. Soon he became strong enough to fight against Set in a pretty epic and sometimes strange battle to take back the throne of Egypt. Listen, this story’s wild. We think you should definitely look this one up when you’ve got time.

Bastet

The goddess of protection, pleasure, and the bringer of good health. The Lady of the East is a cat-headed goddess who rides through the sky with her father Ra in his chariot to protect him from harm. At night she turns into a cat to protect Ra from the serpent Apep, his greatest enemy and the embodiment of chaos itself. It’s said that Bastet is the gentler, more domesticated aspect of Sekhmet—lion-headed warrior, protector, and goddess of healing. Or perhaps Sekhmet is an aspect of Bastet’s. Either way, you won’t want to mess with these cats.

Anubis

The jackal-headed god of death, mummification, and the afterlife sounds like a really scary guy at first, but all the stories with Anubis point to him being a just and benevolent figure. In the afterlife, Anubis weighs one’s heart against one of the goddess Ma’at’s feathers. If your heart is lighter than the feather, you ascend to a heavenly existence. If it’s heavier, then you and your heart will be consumed by Ammit, Eater of Hearts and Devourer of the Dead.
