Have you ever heard of Snake Island? Otherwise known as Ilha de Queimada Grande, this island is positively overrun with 2,000-4,000 golden lancehead vipers—one of the deadliest snakes in the entire world.
A golden lancehead viper’s venom is up to five times more toxic than other lancehead species. Their venom can kill a full-grown adult in just under an hour. Even with treatment, their venom can cause a host of health issues like kidney failure, muscular tissue necrosis, brain hemorrhaging, and intestinal bleeding. So as you can imagine, the locals try to stay away from this deadly island.
Stories abound about the horrible fates of those that set foot on “Snake Island.” A fisherman once landed on the island in search of bananas, only to be discovered in his boat only days later. Dead, in a pool of blood, with snake bites dotting his body.
Rumor has it that pirates put the snakes on the island to protect their buried treasure. Though scientists say that the snakes came to flourish on the island because they had no ground-level predators on Ilha de Queimada Grande.
These days, trips to the island are heavily controlled by the Brazilian government. So there’ll be no treasure hunting on the island very soon.
