The Feast of Lupercalia: The Precursor to Valentine’s Day

The Feast of Lupercalia: The Precursor to Valentine’s Day

2 minute read

As Valentine's Day approaches, the air is filled with love and anticipation. While it is widely celebrated as a day of romance, the origins of this amorous occasion can be traced back to the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia.

Lupercalia, a pastoral festival held in mid-February, was dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and the founders of Rome, Romulus, and Remus. The festival was a wild and festive affair, marked by feasting, fertility rites, and unconventional rituals that sought to purify and bless the city.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Lupercalia was the matchmaking lottery. Young men would draw the names of eligible women from an urn, and the chosen pair would be considered partners for the duration of the festival, often leading to more lasting connections. This seemingly arbitrary method of pairing shares a striking resemblance to the modern tradition of exchanging Valentine's cards.

Another link between Lupercalia and Valentine's Day lies in the celebration's association with fertility. Lupercalian priests, known as Luperci, would conduct purifying rituals involving the sacrifice of goats and dogs. The sacrificial blood was then smeared on the foreheads of two young men, symbolizing the renewal of life and fertility.

As Christianity spread across the Roman Empire, efforts were made to replace pagan festivals with Christian celebrations. In the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I officially declared February 14th as St. Valentine's Day, associating it with the feast day of St. Valentine. The Christianization of Lupercalia transformed the festival into a day of love and affection, gradually evolving into the romantic celebration we recognize today.

Oh, and, happy Lupercalia! Don’t party too hard. 😉
