In Norse mythology, Jörmungandr, the World Serpent, was a giant dragon or sea serpent so large, it was able to surround the earth and grasp its own tail. 

Today, the ancient imagery of a serpent-like creature eating its tail is known as an ouroboros, signifying infinity and the cycle of birth and death.
