Near the village of Gnyozdovo in Smolensk Oblast, Russia, Gnezdovo is an archeological site that contains extensive remains of the Slavic-Varangian settlement in the 10th century. 

The Gnezdovo mask was unearthed in this site. It was worn by the ancient Slavs as a protection amulet as well as their warriors to invoke fear in their enemies in battles. 

This amulet necklace an exact representation of archaeological findings dug on the territory of Smolensk region in Russia.  In Slav culture, the mask was often made from rough metals and bronze.
