A ring with a secret compartment which could be used to hold poison became popular in Europe during the sixteenth century. These poison rings were used to slip poison into an enemy's food or drink, or to facilitate the suicide of the wearer in the case of capture.
The rings were so popular that to this day in Italy, pouring a drink from a bottle with the back of the hand facing downwards - which would allow something to drop from a ring bezel - is called versare alla traditora, or “traitor’s way pouring”. And it is still considered offensive.
Later, such rings were used for more benign purposes - to carry perfume, locks of hair, relics or other keepsakes of loved ones.
