Meet The Nebulae
Carina
The Carina Nebula is located in the Carina–Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way galaxy, approximately 7,500 light years (2,300 pc) from Earth.
The nebula is one of the largest diffuse nebulae in our skies and is four times as large as and even brighter than the Orion Nebula.
CG4
Commonly referred to as God's Hand, CG4 is located approximately 1300 light years (400pc) from Earth.
It is sometimes referred to as a "cometary globule" as its shape is similar to that of a comet, albeit with a dusty, cavernous mouth. Its "mouth" appears ready to consume the edge-on spiral galaxy ESO 257-19.
Christmas tree
The Christmas Tree cluster is located in the Monoceros constellation, approximately 3,000 light years (919pc) from Earth.
The Christmas Tree star formation consists of young stars obscured by heavy layers of dust clouds. These dust clouds, along with hydrogen and helium are currently producing luminous new stars.
Helix
Sometimes referred to as the "Eye of God", this eye-shaped planetary nebula is located approximately 700 light years (214pc) from Earth.
One of the closest bright planetary nebulae, it contains about 40,000 cometary knots. Each knot consists of dense globules of dust and gas approximately the size of our Solar system.
Messier 17
Also known as the Omega Nebula, Swan Nebula, Lobster Nebula or the Horsehoe Nebula. Located approximately 5500 light years (1686pc) from Earth.
It is one of the richest starfields in the Milky Way, and is calculated to have 800 times the mass of our sun. This big boy is considered one of the brightest and most massive star-forming regions of our galaxy.
Orion
The Orion Nebula is situated in the Milky Way, south of Orion's Belt, approximately 1,400 light years (429 pc) from Earth.
It is one of the brightest nebulae and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. The closest region of massive star formation to Earth, it has a mass 2,000 times that of the sun.
