Generations of Zen Buddhist masters have used the story of the True Dragon in their teachings.
The legend tells of a man who loved dragons. He studied dragon lore and decorated his home with paintings and statues of dragons. He would talk on and on about dragons to anyone who would listen.
One day, a dragon came across him and thought: "How lovely that this man appreciates us! It would sure make him happy to meet a true dragon."
The dragon then flew to the man's house at night, while he was sleeping. The man woke up and saw the dragon, with its scales and teeth glittering in the moonlight.
And he screamed in terror. Before the dragon could introduce himself, the man grabbed a sword and lunged at the dragon, who immediately flew away.
The story thus became a parable warning against simply taking an intellectual interest in Buddhism without practice or finding a teacher, such that one is unable to find true enlightenment.
This ring depicts a dragon, a symbol of enlightenment in Buddhism, on the outside of the ring.
The Heart Sutra is engraved inside the ring. The sutra contains the essence of Buddhism and is chanted daily for enlightenment by practitioners throughout the world.
